Regenerative Agriculture South America Lead

Connie Echaiz’s work starts with a simple idea. The best agronomic solutions only matter if they make sense to the people who have to use them. That is why she has built her professional trajectory at the intersection of agricultural science, on-the-ground practice, and human decision-making. Rather than treating practices as isolated techniques, she approaches agricultural systems as interconnected socio-ecological processes shaped by soils, crops, weeds, and critically, by the people who manage them. Her work centers on Integrated Weed Management and the adoption of sustainable practices, with a strong interest in understanding why growers choose certain management strategies and how science can better support those decisions in real production contexts.

Her scientific foundation brings together agronomy, weed science, and applied horticultural research. Connie holds a degree in Agronomy from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, a Master of Science in Horticulture and Crop Science from The Ohio State University, and is currently completing a PhD in Agricultural Sciences focused on the adoption of service crops in fruit orchards and vineyards. This background allows her to move fluidly between field experimentation, data analysis, and socio-technical questions related to management adoption, always with a clear emphasis on practical relevance.

Over the years, her career has unfolded where research meets the field and where evidence meets everyday decisions. She has conducted applied weed science research in both Chile and the United States while staying closely connected to farmers, technical teams, and students. Her work spans greenhouse and field experimentation, crop weed interactions, and sharing results through scientific publications, conferences, and extension-oriented activities. Across all these settings, the goal remains consistent. Translating knowledge into management tools that can be realistically implemented. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across academia, extension services, and applied research projects has been a defining feature of her professional path.

Sharing knowledge is a natural extension of that work. Connie enjoys turning research into something useful and easy to apply, whether through teaching, working directly with technical advisors, or creating spaces where growers and researchers can learn from each other. She brings a systems-based and practical mindset to these exchanges, always aiming to connect science with the realities of day-to-day decision-making in production systems.

Underlying all these roles is a steady motivation. Ensuring that agricultural knowledge translates into decisions that improve system performance while respecting ecological and human dimensions. Connie is particularly driven by questions at the boundary between science and practice, and by how research and extension can be more effectively aligned with real world decision-making.

Outside her professional work, Connie stays closely connected to local food systems in everyday life. Collecting seeds, preparing seedlings, tending her own garden, and caring for seasonal crops keep her grounded in slower rhythms and seasonal cycles. In recent years, she has also deepened her interest in traditional and contemporary food fermentation, such as kombucha, kefir grains, ginger beer, and sauerkraut, exploring food as a living process shaped by time, care, and microbial life. These practices reinforce her conviction that agriculture and food systems are inseparable when viewed through the lens of local food systems and sustainable land stewardship.
